Thursday Press #90: I'm held together by off-brand flex seal tape
[28 JUL 2023] Lifestyle Edition Vol. 017
At this point, I feel like my life is held together by off-brand Flex Seal tape.
You know, that ridiculously strong, fix-everything tape from infomercials?
Yeah, that one.
Except imagine it a little less functional, and with a slow and steady drip that you can't quite locate…
I PROMISE this isn't going to be some depressing, self-deprecating email.
But whenever I hear “You have everything together!” it makes me want to pull back the curtain and show you what's really going on.
I can't tell you the last time I've mopped the floor and I'm almost always running up against deadlines. But that's okay!
The truth is bestie, you can never really know what's going on behind the scenes in someone's life.
I know this is a little different from our usual quick-and-dirty month recap form of an intro that typically precedes the Friday Favorites round up
& that's because I'm currently typing this out surrounded by some of my closest business friends in Carolina Beach, NC, for a long weekend business retreat.
And so I want to share one of the many lessons I'm sure to keep learning this weekend with you…
WHAT I'M LEARNING
The online space gives people an equal footing that was previously unprecedented in the “real” world.
So why are you still letting prejudice and assumptions keep you from reaching your full potential?
From reaching out to that potential connection because you think they're “better than you”. Or because you think you're “better than them”… 👀
From showing up online because your hair isn't done or you keep messing up your words.
Being open and willing to make connections is what brought me the community I'm surrounded by now.
And what we're all realizing is that we're all way more similar than we realize, despite the fact that we're from different locations, backgrounds, and life experiences.
We may not “make sense” as a group, but it's been the most validating, supportive experience of the past year, and I am endlessly grateful for these women!
WHAT I'M LOVING
Favorite Book: Just like everyone else on the Internet, I read Fourth Wing, an incredible dragon-based fantasy novel. I'm SO annoyed I have to wait for the sequel to come out, but it really is so good.
Another fantasy book I really enjoyed was The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake! All the dark academia vibes 🤩
Favorite Desk Tunes: This month was all about throwbacks, particularly the bangers of the early 2010s. Ohhhh the nostalgia.
Try this playlist for an instant time travel moment.
Favorite Self-Care Activity: I talk about my love of books plenty here, but it's worth the reminder that reading IS self-care. Lately on the weekends, I've been spending most of the morning (and most of the day sometimes, tbh) reading.
This week I just checked out 10 books from the library and I'm honestly not sure I'll make it before they're due.
Whether you opt for audiobooks, ebooks, or good ol' paper, reading can be an incredible form of self-care (and a very necessary way to decrease that ever-growing screen time).
Favorite Posts: ICYMI, here are 2 of my favorite Instagram posts from June!
Favorite Coffee Order: Can I be honest dude? I'm still getting the same iced latte with peppermint syrup. But if you're just dyyyyying for a new coffee rec from your local not-at-all-coffee-influencer, I'm also loving hazelnut coffee.
NOT hazelnut syrup, but actual hazelnut coffee grounds (or Nespresso pods in my case). And yes, there's a difference.
And of course, here's this month's favorite cat pictures:
Are you freakin' KIDDING ME.
I'm off to frolic in the waves and enjoy a weekend of business development, rest, and inspiration. I hope you have an inCREDIBLE weekend, friend.
PEACE OUT, GIRL SCOUT!!!
