Thursday Press #89: I want you to bring it all
[20 JUL 2023] how to make your marketing 110% YOU
There are a lot of hard truths in life, friend.
The fact that walks actually are good for your mental health, the fact that adult friends are 10x harder to maintain (especially when your online friends are in different states), the fact that my cats can't speak English... I could go on.
But today I want to share one of the hardest truths of all.
It's one that I wish I'd learned sooner and I'm still in the process of remembering it
Ready for it?
You cannot control other people's thoughts or actions.
It sounds pretty obvious and self-explanatory, but I was surprised to see just how much I was trying to control people by changing myself.
(thank u therapy)
I thought if I acted a certain way or said a certain thing, I could make sure everyone liked me. Honestly, I don't even think I stopped to think whether or not I liked them.
It makes sense.
We're human. We want to be loved and accepted.
And we think the way to do that is by changing ourselves or asking the people around us to change.
While you can change yourself, make sure it's because of something you desire, not to please someone else or get a desired reaction from someone. Because you can't control that shit!
Not everyone is going to like you.
It's up to us to find and/or create the spaces and opportunities and people that will appreciate us as we are (and vice versa).
At the end of the day, people are going to think and do whatever they're going to think and do, so you might as well be true to yourself in the meantime.
If this is what you needed to hear today, wonderful. Stop here, go back to your inbox, give yourself a hug.
But if you'd like to hear how this hard truth can help you in your marketing, keep on scrollin'
BELOW THE FOLD
You are not for everyone. You cannot make everyone happy.
This is just a fact. And it's a huuuuuugely wonderful opportunity, I promise.
Vanilla ice cream could be "for everyone" but that's boring. (I actually love vanilla ice cream, but apparently that's an unpopular opinion).
You're not boring, friend.
You're a culmination of all of your life experiences and opinions and knowledge, and you deserve to bring all of that with you to your business and marketing.
One thing that's been pointed out a lot with the introduction of Threads is how business owners finally feel like they have a space to be 110% THEM. Heck, even my own bio on the app says "unfiltered thoughts on business & life 24/7"
But what's stopping us from bringing that same energy to Instagram? To our email lists? To our client calls? 👀
Pretending to be someone else may seem like a great strategy to get validation, attract dream clients, and make loads and loads of money.
In the end, though, it ends up making everyone unsatisfied.
You deserve to work with ACTUAL dream clients who appreciate you for you, who share your propensity for cursing on calls (just me?), and who vibe with you on more than just a "this fits my budget and needs" level
I know catering your content to your ideal client is like, the number one rule in marketing.
But don't do it to the extent of sacrificing your own personality, please.
P.S. I know this is easy to say from a place of having an established business and following. If you're scrambling for clients to pay your bills, I understand and I have been there.
Even in the tough times, try not to get discouraged if a disco call doesn't pan out, or if your IG post didn't get lots of engagement.
Sometimes it takes a while for us to find our people, and just because you're not for one person doesn't mean you're unworthy, untalented, or unloveable. ❤️

As we're halfway through the year, in the depths of summer (and the dreaded summer slump), I hope you enjoyed this little pep talk/reminder.
I know I definitely needed it!!
