Thursday Press #139: I lost my cool
[4 JUL 2024] Week 4: Optimizing your landing page for Pinterest
There I was, pouring eggs into ice cube trays at 11 o'clock at night
Why, you ask???
Because our fridge stopped doing its literal ONE JOB.
3 days after I panic-purchased a chest freezer at Lowe's because our freezer crapped out right before we were leaving town for the weekend.
I wish I could make this up, but I've been fighting our 20-year-old fridge for the past few months.
In fact, I've already sent you one email about it, and def didn't expect to be sending another đ
After I'd already tried my best to save the bulk-purchased frozen foods the week before, I was adamant that I wasn't going to let our entire fridge of groceries go to waste
Hence the eggs in ice cube trays.
During this process, I also realized just how many expired condiments were taking up permanent residence in our fridge door. Turns out we do become our parents in the end...
I can laugh about this now that I'm no longer scrounging the pantry for meal-adjacent items and getting coffee out every single morning.
Our landlord coughed up the cash for a new fridge, and even if it is the cheapest model on the market, doesn't have an ice maker or water dispenser, and barely fits a full gallon of milk, it both cools and freezes.
Annnnnd, now I can officially say we've achieved the American dream.
Because that chest freezer I got to save our prepper-worthy freezer stash? It's staying.
That means we're one step closer to the drinks-fridge-in-the-garage level of suburban wealth. IYKYK
Somehow, I don't think that's what F. Scott Fitzgerald had in mind when he was writing about the green lightâŚ
and it definitely wasn't what his namesake, Francis Scott Key, was imagining when he wrote the Star-Spangled Banner.
He was about 100 years too early to worry about a refrigerator, and honestly? Kinda jealous.
Sooo yeah. What started as a cooling catastrophe on the hottest week of the year turned into a net positive ~investment~ (if you squint)
I'm not going to let this stop me from continuing our email marketing series, though! Because this week's topic is something I'm verrrry passionate about...
How to Optimize Your Landing Page for Pinterest
I've found the silver lining in my fridge debacle.
But I could've saved us a lot of time, stress, and money if I'd just put in the maintenance order a lot sooner.
Our freezer was on the fritz for weeks, but since the last technician wasn't able to do much, I convinced myself â "why bother?"
That's the kind of attitude I hear a lot from online business owners when it comes to their freebie opt-ins.
Here's the typical sitch:
You sign up for an email service provider
You create a freebie
You create an opt-in page for that freebie using the tools included with your ESP
And you call it done
Why bother creating a new page on your website when Flodesk (or your preferred alternative) has landing pages right there, ready to use?!?
I'll tell you why bother, First name / pal â because if you want to use Pinterest to grow your email list, having a landing page on your own website is the best way to do it.
Why? Here are 5 reasons:
Pinterest prefers pins that link to your claimed domain
Using a third-party landing page may lead to misattributed pins
Pinterest users need more information before opting in, which is easier to include in your own landing page
Your lead magnet landing page can link to the rest of your website
You can track analytics more accurately
Now that we're on the same page about why you're going to create a landing page for your lead magnet on your own website, let's talk about what actually goes on that page.
LEAD MAGNET LANDING PAGE CHECKLIST
âď¸ Catchy headline / page title
This might be the title of your lead magnet, a call-out of your target audience's main pain point, or the primary benefit that the lead magnet provides
âď¸ Short description of the lead magnet
If itâs not obvious from the headline, give a little more explanation and detail about the lead magnet. Explain the format itâs in, more about why itâll actually help your audience solve their need, etc.
âď¸ Opt-in form
This is how your audience is actually going to subscribe to your list and get the lead magnet. Do not skip this one!
âď¸ About section
Who the heck are you and what makes you qualified to educate about this subject? This is what readers are going to want to know when theyâre considering downloading your lead magnet!
Once again, Pinterest users donât know you, so they donât trust that youâre the expert yet. Use this section to give a topic-relevant introduction to what youâre all about.
^^ These are what I would consider the "must-haves" for your landing page, but there are more things you might want to consider, including:
More audience identification
Skimmer-friendly details
Lead magnet mockup
Social proof
Other free / paid content
If you want the full breakdown of these elements (+ examples of them in action!), read this week's blog post!
Creating a Lead Magnet Landing Page for Pinterest
Creating a lead magnet landing page is one of the first things I make sure all of my clients have for their freebies, and I promise it is so worth the "bother".
Just because you're getting by using that Flodesk link doesn't mean that the whole thing won't go kaput one day like our freezer. And it'll always be during the most inconvenient time possible, of course.
We'll be wrapping up this Pinterest + email series next week, but until then...
Happy July, happy Q3, and happy holy-flying-biscuits-it's-hot to you and yours! â¤ď¸đ
