Thursday Press #10: What actually makes you an entrepreneur anyway?
[16 DEC 2021] The story of a reformed black coffee drinker
Like Shania Twain, the fact that you drink your coffee black don't impress me much. But that's because I've grown.
In a poll I put up on Instagram the other day, I asked what drink you thought I ordered for my Monday coffeeshop work sesh, and while 25% of you got it right, only 2 people guessed black coffee.
(It was a London Fog, btw)
Y'all know me well, but did you know there was a time in my life when I would choose to drink black coffee if I was making it myself? No milk, no sweetener, no nonsense.
Partly because I didn't want to store milk in my tiny dorm fridge and partly because I thought it made me seem “cooler” and more adult, I suffered many many nights of pitch black, bitter coffee.
It got me through all-nighters, early mornings, freezing cold winter finals weeks, and much much more.
But I am so glad I'm over it.
I still take my homemade coffee pretty plain (just 2% milk), but even that little splash of dairy has made all the difference.
Now let's get metaphorical.
I've done a lot of things because I thought they would make me appear a certain way, including the prime example of drinking black coffee.
Did anyone actually know what was in my Starbucks red cup? Heck no. It was a show I was putting on just. for. me.
I could go for a classic 2010s facepalm right about now.
If I'm honest, it's indicative of how I live my life, and I'm betting you might resonate with it too.
We're racing towards the end of the year, which means 2021 retrospectives and humblebrags are flying at you from every corner of the Internet.
Tips for setting routines, habits, affirmations, and goals are pouring into your inbox, and while I'm sure you'll hear a similar spiel from me before January is over, here's an important pre-holiday reminder:
You don't have to do specific things or look a specific way to live a completely successful and fulfilled life. You can take a break in the middle of the day to take a walk. You can start work at 6 a.m. or 1 p.m. You can drink your $8 oat milk cold foam shaken espresso with all the holiday cheer Starbucks can give and enjoy every single sip of it.
None of these things make you any less or more of an entrepreneur, certainly not your coffee order.
